10 Fitness 'Facts' You Probably Believed... Until Now

We see so many 'fitness facts you never knew' type posts online, and honestly, it drives us a little crazy. So in this blog post we are going to bust some of the more common fitness myths that you probably see and hear:

[1] I CAN EAT AS MUCH PROTEIN AS I WANT AND I WON'T GAIN FAT - MYTH

You can actually consume too much protein and it will store as fat. On average ladies need to have approximately 1 gram of protein per kilogram of bodyweight if training and guys need 1.5-1.8g per kilogram if they are training. Do you know where to find protein? We have a chart here>

[2] DIINDOLYLMETHANE IS BAD FOR YOU - MYTH

Just because you cant pronounce a chemical in a supplement doesn’t mean its bad for you. This is actually just a molecule found in Broccoli which can help fight off cancer and increase testosterone levels.

[3] TRAINING A MUSCLE MORE OFTEN WON'T MAKE IT GROW FASTER - FACT

Your muscles need to recover before they can grow, so plan your programs so you don’t over-work a muscle. Everyone one is different, but don’t over do it!

[4] STRETCHING BEFORE A SESSION WILL HELP YOU LOOSEN UP - FACT

But, did you know that they are actually not ideal? Doing a dynamic stretch or activation technique (a 'stretch' or warm up exercise which involves movement) will help get your body ready for your training, static stretches are better utilised after training when your muscles are cooling down.

[5] YOU LOSE WEIGHT WHEN YOU ARE STRESSED - FACT

You do lose weight, but it's not the type of weight you want to lose. Normally when we are stressed our body goes in to a catabolic state and eats away at our muscles, meaning you’re not burning fat at all, and in fact, you are actually slowing down your metabolism.

[6] SIT UPS AND CRUNCHES WILL HELP ME BURN BELLY FAT - FACT

Yeah they can, but it will take a while if that’s all you are doing. Sticking to a balanced program of weights & cardio and reducing sugars and stress will be the most effective ways to reduce your belly.

[7] WAIST TRAINERS WILL HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT - MYTH

But it worked for all of those celebrities?? Because they got paid to tell you that. Waist trainers are designed to be worn for small periods of time, ideally conforming the ribs to be smaller. If you wear this under clothing it will make you look slim, but as soon as it comes off, everything will go back to it's regular spot.

[8] TEATOXES HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT - FACT

But, did you know that this is just water weight? And you will gain it all back (plus potentially more) as soon as you are finished your 'teatox'. If you want to stop your body from being addicted to sugars and saturated fats give our 7 day meal plan a go>

[9] DOING A 30 DAY SQUAT CHALLENGE WILL GROW ME A BOOTY - MYTH

Booties weren’t made in day or a month, they take time and effort putting heavy load from weights and doing hypertrophy training to help them gain mass. Don’t take short cuts, train your ass right.

[10] EATING FEWER CALORIES WILL HELP ME BURN FAT - MYTH

Just because you eat less than what you need to in a day doesn’t mean you will lose weight. Your body is a furnace that needs to be fed to fire, the more you feed and stoke the fire by exercising and living a healthy balanced life style, the more you will see results.
