Staying Motivated: Strategies to Keep the Fire Alive During Plateaus
Staying Motivated: Strategies to Keep the Fire Alive During Plateaus
We've all been there—the dreaded plateau. You've been putting in the effort, sticking to your routine, and making progress towards your goals. But suddenly, it feels like you've hit a wall. Your progress has slowed down, and it's easy to feel discouraged and unmotivated. So how do you keep the fire alive during these challenging times? Here are some strategies to help you stay inspired and motivated, even when you're facing a plateau.
1. Reflect on Your Progress
When you hit a plateau, it's easy to focus solely on the lack of progress. But instead of dwelling on what you haven't achieved, take a moment to reflect on how far you've come. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Remind yourself of the progress you've made and the obstacles you've overcome along the way. This can help boost your confidence and reignite your motivation to keep pushing forward.
I recommend clients start a running list of all changes they see across multiple areas, like training, energy levels, focus, mood, and so on! Because chances are something is still moving even if you can’t see a visible difference just yet.
2. Set Realistic Goals
Plateaus often occur when our expectations don't align with reality. Take some time to reassess your goals and make sure they're realistic and achievable. Break down your long-term goals into smaller, more manageable milestones. This can help prevent feelings of overwhelm and frustration when progress slows down. By setting realistic goals, you'll be more likely to stay motivated and focused on the journey ahead.
For instance, for fat loss, aiming to lose around 0.5 to 1 kilogram (1 to 2 pounds) per week is considered realistic and sustainable. In terms of muscle gain, aiming to gain around 0.25 to 0.5 kilograms (0.5 to 1 pound) of muscle per week is achievable for beginners, while more experienced individuals may aim for slightly slower rates of muscle gain (approximately 0.25kg or 0.5 pounds per month).
3. Focus on Non-Scale Victories
While it's easy to get fixated on the number on the scale, there are many other indicators of progress that are equally important. Pay attention to how you feel both physically and mentally. Are you sleeping better? Do you have more energy throughout the day? Are you feeling more confident and capable in your workouts? These non-scale victories are just as valid and worth celebrating as any number on the scale. By shifting your focus away from the scale, you can stay motivated by the positive changes you're experiencing in other areas of your life.
4. Find Your Why
When motivation wanes, it's important to reconnect with your "why"—the reason behind your fitness journey. What inspired you to start in the first place? Whether it's improving your health, gaining confidence, or setting a positive example for your loved ones, reminding yourself of your deeper purpose can reignite your passion and drive to succeed. Write down your why and keep it somewhere visible as a daily reminder of what you're working towards.
5. Practice Self-Compassion
During challenging times, it's easy to be hard on yourself and spiral into negative self-talk. Instead of beating yourself up over perceived failures or setbacks, practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would a friend facing a similar situation. Remember that setbacks are a natural part of the journey, and they don't define your worth or potential for success. By practicing self-compassion, you'll be better equipped to navigate plateaus with resilience and grace.
6. Seek Support
You don't have to navigate plateaus alone. Reach out to friends, family, or a supportive community for encouragement and accountability. Share your struggles and successes with others who can relate to your journey. Having a support system can provide valuable perspective, motivation, and encouragement during challenging times. Whether it's a workout buddy, a coach, or an online community, surrounding yourself with positive influences can help keep the fire alive when motivation wanes.
7. Visualise Success
Visualisation is a powerful tool for maintaining motivation during plateaus. Take some time each day to visualise yourself achieving your goals. Imagine how it will feel to reach your desired outcome, and picture yourself overcoming any obstacles that stand in your way. By visualising success, you can create a clear mental image of what you're working towards, making it easier to stay motivated and focused on your journey.
8. Practice Gratitude
In the midst of a plateau, it's easy to focus on what we lack or what's not going according to plan. Shift your perspective by practicing gratitude for the things you do have and the progress you've made so far. Keep a gratitude journal and write down three things you're grateful for each day, no matter how small. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude can help shift your mindset from one of scarcity to one of abundance, making it easier to stay motivated and positive during challenging times.
9. Stay Consistent
Above all, consistency is key when it comes to overcoming plateaus. Even when progress feels slow or stagnant, continue to show up and put in the work. Trust the process and stay committed to your goals, knowing that every small step forward counts. Plateaus are temporary, but the habits you build along the way are what will ultimately lead to long-term success. Stay consistent, stay focused, and keep the fire alive, knowing that your hard work will pay off in the end.
Plateaus are a natural part of the fitness journey, but they don't have to derail your progress or dampen your motivation. By implementing these strategies, you can stay inspired, focused, and resilient in the face of adversity. Remember to celebrate your victories, stay consistent, and never lose sight of your why. With the right mindset and approach, you can break through plateaus and continue moving forward towards your goals. Keep the fire alive, and let your determination fuel your success!
